Literature terms for Q3
Imagery: In literature, one of the strongest devices is imagery, wherein the author uses words and phrases to create “mental images” for the reader using the 5 senses. Imagery helps the reader to visualize, and therein, more realistically experience the author’s writings and awaken the readers’ sensory perceptions
Irony (verbal): Verbal irony (also called sarcasm) occurs when a writer makes a statement in which the actual meaning differs from the meaning that the words appear to express
Irony (situational) Situational irony occurs when the reader is led to believe that one thing will occur but, in fact, the opposite occurs. This can be humorous or tragic
Irony (dramatic): Dramatic irony occurs when the reader/ audience knows something, but the
characters within the story do not
Setting: The setting is the time and place of the events of the story. It basically helps in establishing where and when and under what circumstances the story is taking place
Metaphor: A metaphor is an implied comparison that is made between two unlike things
that actually have something important in common.
Personification: Personification is one of the most commonly used and recognized literary devices. It refers to the practice of attaching human traits and characteristics with inanimate objects, phenomena and animals
Simile: Similes are comparisons between two unrelated and dissimilar things using like or as (and sometimes than).
Dystopia – An imagined setting in which everything is unpleasant or bad
example = The Hunger Games
Utopia – A piece of utopian fiction is set in an ideal or perfect community example = Pleasantville movie
Science fiction – A genre of fiction in which the stories often tell about science and technology of the future. It is important to note that science fiction has a relationship with the principles of science—these stories involve partially true—partially fictitious laws or theories of science. It should not be completely unbelievable, because it then ventures into the genre fantasy.
Example = WALL-E movie
Fantasy - fiction genre that uses magic or other supernatural elements as a main plot element, theme, or setting. Many works within the genre take place in imaginary worlds where magic and magical creatures are common.
Example = Cinderella movie

Foreshadowing - The literary device foreshadowing refers to the use of words/phrases that give hints to the reader of
something that is going to happen without revealing the story or spoiling the suspense. Foreshadowing is used to suggest an upcoming outcome to the story.
Ex – movie Sixth Sense
Genre - A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature,
characterized by similarities in form
ex) sci – fi, or pop music
1st person point of view - With first person point of view, the story is told by the narrator from his/ her point of view. It is easily identified by the use of "I" or "Me".
Ex) Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank
2nd Person point of View - You use the second-person point of view to address the reader. The second person uses the pronouns “you,” “your,”
and “yours.”
EX) The Twilight Zone show
3rd Person Point of View - With third person point of view, the narrator does not participate in the events of the story and tells the story by referring to all characters and places in the third person with third person pronouns and proper nouns (he, she, they)

A symbol - is an object that represents something else, usually something more meaningful.

The theme of any literary work is the base topic or focus that acts as a foundation for the entire literary piece. The theme links all aspects of the literary work with one another and is basically the main subject
